Mystery

There is an age-old mystery about the mysterious lake Roopkund, even now trekkers can see large-sized bones of ancient humans, and horses, which are almost double the size of the present-day humans and horses. Many scientists and explorers have tried to solve this mystery but went back by folding their lower lips downwards. They could not figure out how the bones are so large. It is believed that there was a fair near Roopkund lake, there was a large congregation of horse-mounted men, an avalanche struck the fair and it all got destroyed causing deaths, and with time, snow, and cold winds the bones remained leaving behind all the mortal remains of the beings.

Mythology

It is believed that when Shiva and Parwati were returning to their abode after killing several demons in a war Parwati wanted to bathe, Shiva made a lake (Kund), and Parwati saw her beauties in the water reflection and could not stop self-praising, hence the name Roopkund. Another version of the myth is that the King of Kannauj (Now in U.P.) wanted to visit nearby Nanda Devi yatra with his entourage of his Queen, her maid, dancers, servants, and musicians, they made a lot of noise which infuriated the goddess. The queen delivered a baby in a cave on the way, this further infuriated the goddess as it is believed the first 13 days are considered unclean, she created a hailstorm the size of tennis balls and killed all near the Roopkund lake.

Picturesque

The lake is nestled between the most beautiful Himalayan hills, surrounded by rocky glaciers. Once you cross Bedni Bugyal an extremely beautiful green Himalayan meadows, you will have to trek steep to reach Roopkund. Since the weather is not predictable, it is best to carry coats. The trek is rated as difficult, especially the steep patch by experts. On the way you will see and experience the rich Pahadi village culture, the local Pahadis are good-natured peasants, they are very hospitable and also are helpful by nature.

Wan

Wan is the last habituated village on the way to the trek, Roopkund has no human population, so the last place you can stay is at Wan, the village has lodgings, a small food corner, and even a Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) guest house. Once you cross Wan you must carry a well-equipped tent for your onward trekking journey. If you are in a group a cook can be of great help, as packaged food is the best choice on the higher hills.
